How Chinese parents find an English teacher in 2026: the six steps
From a RedNote search to a WeChat Pay transfer: the path a Chinese mother takes before she books a lesson, and what the teacher has to get right at each step.
Before July 2021 the process was simple. A parent signed up with an online school, picked a teacher from a catalogue, paid for a big package and the platform did the rest.
Then the Double Reduction policy (双减, shuāng jiǎn) took away the licences of the big companies that taught children after school. Platforms that once employed more than 100,000 foreign teachers shut down within months. Parents lost prepaid packages worth thousands of yuan.
Demand did not go anywhere. It moved. Parents started looking for teachers themselves, on social media, and that is now the normal way to do it. If you want Chinese students without a platform in the middle, you need to know what this path looks like from the parent’s side.
Here it is, step by step.
Step 1. The search
The mother opens RedNote (小红书, Xiaohongshu) and types something like:
- 少儿英语外教 — children’s English, foreign teacher
- 英语口语老师 — spoken English teacher
The algorithm shows her posts from teachers. She scrolls through a dozen and stops at two or three.
What decides whether she stops at yours: the cover image and the first line. She is not reading yet, she is filtering.
Step 2. The research
Now she reads. Your posts, your videos, the comments under them. She is checking two things: are you real, and do you look like someone her child would enjoy?
If the profile earns her trust, she sends a direct message on RedNote or looks for your WeChat.
Step 3. The move to WeChat
You exchange contacts, and from here on everything happens in WeChat. She asks her questions. You send your introduction video, and later your price list and terms.
WeChat is not just a messenger for her. It is where she pays for groceries, talks to her child’s school teacher and books the doctor. If you are not on WeChat, you do not exist in this market.
Step 4. The demo lesson
If she likes what she sees, she books a demo lesson for her child. Twenty-five minutes, and she will decide.
This is your main chance. Everything before it was only getting to this point.
Step 5. Feedback and the decision
After the demo you send a detailed note about the child: their level, what they do well, what to work on, and the plan you propose.
Many teachers treat this as a formality. It is not. It is the moment the mother sees that you actually paid attention to her child, and it does more selling than anything you said before.
Step 6. The payment
She buys a package of lessons and pays through Alipay or WeChat Pay. You agree on a schedule. The wheel starts turning.
PayPal, bank transfers and Stripe feel foreign and risky to Chinese parents. If you cannot take yuan through these two apps, many families will simply not go further.
What this means for you
Each step has a tool behind it, and skipping any of them loses the client:
| Step | Where it happens | Your job |
|---|---|---|
| Search, research | RedNote | Be findable and look trustworthy |
| Conversation | Answer fast, ask about the child | |
| Demo | ClassIn or VooV | Win in 25 minutes |
| Payment | Alipay, WeChat Pay | Make paying easy |
Start with the first thing on the list that you do not have yet. For most teachers coming from platforms, that is RedNote: the platform never needed you to be found, so you never had to learn how.
